Events Leading up to the First Persian Gulf War - 1295 Words

From 1880-1888, Iraq and Iran engaged in a conflict that resulted in much bloodshed without much of anything being resolved. This was known as the First Persian Gulf War, which started with the land and air invasion of Iran by Iraq on September 22, 1980. The authoritarian president of the Republic of Iraq during this time period was Saddam Hussein, who was best known for his extreme violation of human rights. Ruhollah Khomeini led the Islamic Republic of Iran after the conclusion of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which ended the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Both of these regimes exhibited tight control of their citizens and restricted many of their rights. These restrictions are highlighted in two novels that explore the lives of citizens living in them during this time period. I’jaam: An Iraqi Rhapsody by Sinan Antoon is a manuscript that was written in the confines of a jail cell in Iraq during this time period by a young man named Furat. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhoo d by Marjane Satrapi is an autobiographical novel that depicts the life of the people in Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution. Both of these people had to deal with the authoritarian rule and conflict between these two nations, however, there are many ways in which these citizens resisted this control, which is also explored in these novels.
